Washington Brain & Spine Institute is the largest neurosurgical group in the Washington Baltimore area. Within our group of physicians is represented the full range of general neurosurgical and subspecialty expertise. As innovations and new developments in neurosurgery emerge, our group has moved to embrace them. However, in spite of our growth, we still pride ourselves on caring for each patient as though he or she were a family member.
The Institute has a long tradition of providing excellence in neurological surgery to patients. During the 1940s, Walter Dandy, one of the founding fathers of neurosurgery, trained then-resident Hugo V. Rizzoli at Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore. After the war, Dr Rizzoli began a private practice in neurosurgery in a small downtown Washington DC office, and was joined by younger neurosurgical associates before he left for an academic position. Over the decades, the practice grew and flourished to be what it is today -- a cadre of highly respected neurosurgeons, each prominent within the medical and professional community.
An important dimension and longstanding tradition of the Institute is its academic affiliations. From the beginning, our physicians have demonstrated a commitment to the hands-on training of neurosurgical residents, historically with those from George Washington University, and more recently from Georgetown University Medical Center. This aspect of the practice has served to further position our medical group in the forefront of neurosurgical innovation.
