J. Alex Thomas, M.D. is the newest associate of the Washington Brain and Spine Institute. A long-time District of Columbia resident, Dr. Thomas attended Georgetown University School of Medicine and then completed his neurosurgical residency at Georgetown University Hospital. At Georgetown, Dr. Thomas underwent advanced training in minimally-invasive techniques in spinal surgery including laminectomy, discectomy, lumbar fusion and extreme-lateral approaches to the spine. He is the only member of our Institute with advanced training in minimally-invasive spinal surgery.
In addition to these minimally-invasive techniques, Dr. Thomas also specializes in traditional open spinal procedures including those for complex spinal tumors and trauma. Dr. Thomas also has received specialized training in cranial neurosurgery, including surgery of tumors, vascular malformations and aneurysms, pituitary tumors and facial pain syndromes.
Dr. Thomas is an active member of several professional societies including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Thomas has authored several peer-reviewed articles on subjects ranging from pediatric brain tumors to vascular neurosurgery.
Dr. Thomas is a graduate of Duke University where he was awarded 4 varsity letters for swimming. Dr. Thomas remains involved in endurance sports and has an interest in the chronic degenerative conditions that occur in the spines of endurance athletes. He hopes to use minimally-invasive techniques, when indicated, to help these patients return to full athletic performance as quickly as possible.
When not practicing neurosurgery Dr. Thomas enjoys a range of outdoors activities including climbing, snowboarding and cycling. His climbing adventures have taken him to mountain ranges all over the world. Finally, Dr. Thomas is half Peruvian and a fluent Spanish speaker. He welcomes the opportunity to care for members of the local Latin community.
Dr. Thomas is licensed in the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland. He resides in Northwest D.C.
