F. Donald Cooney, M.D., is a board certified neurosurgeon with special experience in spinal surgery, especially endoscopic and microscopic surgery for herniated discs, subjects on which he has also lectured and published. Dr. Cooney graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After a surgical internship he completed a neurosurgical residency at The George Washington University Medical Center and affiliated hospitals. He served his country as Captain in the U.S. Army 14th Field Hospital.
Dr. Cooney serves as Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and is presently Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery and Director of the Teaching Program at The Washington Hospital Center (Washington's largest private hospital).
Dr. Cooney is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and is a member of and has been president of the Washington Academy of Neurosurgery. He is a member of the Societe Internationale De Chirugie, North American Spine Society and is a charter member of the International Intradiscal Society. He is also a member of the Aquinas, Clinical Pathological, Osler and X-Knife Societies (radiosurgery). In addition, he is a member of the Undersea Medical Society, and the International Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care.
He serves or has served on the boards as a trustee of the Washington Hospital Center, Med Star Health, the Connelly School (chairman) and King's College.
Dr. Cooney holds licenses in the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland. He resides with his family in Washington. Dr. Cooney was featured on the cover of The Washingtonian magazine's issue for Top Doctors.
